BRITISH INQUIRY OPENED. THREE HUNDRED WITNESSES TO EXAMINE. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 2. The special commission set up by the Board of Trade to investigate the circumstances of the Titanic disaster has opened its sittings at Westminster. The Crown Law Officers are representing the Board of Trade. Sir R. Finlay represents the White Star Company, and Mr T. Scanlon the Seamen's and Firemen's Unions. There will be three hundred witnesses. BRUCE ISMAY ILL. A telegram from New York states that Mr Bruce Ismay, of the White Star Company, who has been subjected to intensely bitter criticism since the wreck of the Titanic, is suffering from severe nervous strain.
SAFETY APPLIANCES AT SEA. A Berlin messago says that 100 representatives of shipping companies and maritime organisations will attend a conference initiated by the Kaiser to discuss safety appliances at sea. THE VESSEL'S BANDMASTER.
The body of Mr Hartley, bandmaster of the Titanic, has been recovered. His music case was strapped round his body.
At a meeting of the Boaud of Governors of the Technical College last night, the chairman referred to the Titanic disaster, and a motion of sorrow and sympathy with relatives of the deceased was carried, those present standing.
