Watson, marino superintendent for the Union Company at Melbourne, whilst the latter went on holiday leave. The American and Australian line steamer Anglo-Bolivian, bound from New York to New Zealand, via Sydney, left the latter port yesterday for Auckland. On completion 01 discharge at the latter port sho will come on to Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin, being due here about Hay 15. The largest steamer ever launched from the yard of Mr Rock Davis, at Blackball, . Woy Woy, was launched last week. She is for the New Zealand coastal timber-carry- . tng trade, and was built for Messrs Nellon and Robertson, shipping agents. She is 153 ft long, has 29ft beam and a depth of 10ft 9in. She is to be engined by' Messrs Wildridge and Sinclair. Sho is built of hardwood, with Oregon decks. . Captain S. Willis supervised the work. Rates of freight from Germany to Aus- . tralia. and New Zealand have been raised by the Norddeutscher -Lloyd and the GermanMistralian lines, in consequence of the coal strikes, to the extent of 2s 6d for first and second class goods and Is for other classes, the rates being per cubio metre, or 1000 kilos, at shin's option. During the last few years sailing vessels have gradually grown less in' their visits to Geo.fong. At one time they formed the mainelay of tho grain fleet, and it was a common experience to see the Yarra Street pier fully occupied by windjammers putting out their ballast before going to the railway pier to load. Each year has seen them steadily ioing out before the stronger claims of the -handv tramp steamer, far less picturesque, less profitable to the port for revenue, but far more effective as a cargo carrier. In ! Ihe past two seasons not a sailing vessel haeirrivcd at Gcelong from a foreign port in ballast. There have been a few sailers sent from- Melbourne to load after discharging inward cargo there, but none have come direct from foreign ports. One of tho most famous of the American clipper thips of past days' was the Flying Cloud, says the Now York "Maritime Journal"). She was built by Donald M'itay at East Boston in 1851, and her general dimensions were:—Length of keel, 208 ft; length of .deck, 225 ft; length overall from knighthoads to taffrail, 236 ft; beam, 45ft; ■depth of hold, 21ift. Her tonnage was 1750. Her extraordinary speed justified her name. Ihe best day's run of this famous vessel being, according to Lieutenant Maury, 374 knots, or 433) statute miles. She is also credited with a.trip from New York to San Francisco in eighty-four days. The Kairaki arrived in port yesterday aftomoon with a load of timber from Nydia Bay. On discharge, the vessel will go into dock for cleaning and painting. The Opouri is duo in Lyttelton to-morrow , night with a load of timber from Greymouth. She will lea7e on Tuesday for Greymouth.
