CHRISTCHTJRCH. Friday, Mat 3. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) Drunkenness. —A nrst offender was remanded till May 10 for medical treatment. , ,Beoeen By-laws.—George Grey pleaded not guilty to "a charge of having driven an express van over a crossing at an excessive speed. Mr Leathern appeared for defendant, who wa3 convicted and'fined os. Industrial Cases.—Sydney Chapman (Mr Hunter) was charged with failing to keep a wages or time hook in connection with the Marino Hotel at Sumner. He was convicted and fined 10s and costs.—Charles Cooke was charged with having made a wooden addition close to a wooden building, and also with having erected tho buildin» without having given notice to° tho City Council. The defendant protested" against the fact that private owners were prosecuted in such a case, stating that action should bo taken against the builder, who might reasonably be expected to know vthe city by-laws. On tho first charge he was fined 20s and costs, and on the second 10s and costs. A Judgment Delivered.—Judgment was delivered in the case of Walter Prime and Henry Edward Heath (Mr Kirk), charged with obstructing the free use of the footpath. Tho defendants were carrying on jusiness as windowcleaners, and it was alleged that they had caused a stream of water to fall on the footpath so as to drive pedestrians away. The Magistrate said that there was no doubt that they had inconvenienced the public, but, as the police did not press for a penalty, he would convict and discharge tho defendants. Sureties Asked.—Edward Whittington applied for sureties of the peace from Annie Osborne (Mr Leathern). Plaintiff said that defendant had accosted him in the street and used insulting and abusive language to him. The defendant denied it, and said that the plaintiff had followed her about.
