Amongst the passengers by the Maori from Wellington yesterday morning were .Messrs J. Studholme, C. E. Morris and W. Pryor.

i Captain Lemottee, Colonel. Head and the Hon G. J. Smith were passengers by the Maori from Wellington yesterday. Arrivals in the city include the following :—Messrs D. Todd (Dunedin), A. ,R. Greenwood (Amberley), F. P. MacDougall (Wellington), A. Wilson (London) and D. D. Van Leur (Chicago). Mr J. T. Clarke, who has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney, came to tho front in Dunedin many years ago. Starting as a bookseller he became an auctioneer, and established a large business. Ho was also Mayor of South Dunedin, and many credit him with initiating the progress of the South Dunedin district. Ho is grand secre- , tary of the Independent Order of OddI follows.

A Press Association telegram states that Mr R. Fletcher was re-elected chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board vesterady.

Mr H. Tait, who has been deputy superintendent of the Wellington municipal firo brigade for several years, has been appointed superintendent in succession to Mr O'Brien.

Among the passengers on the Remuera, which left Wellington yesterday afternoon for England, was Mr Hugo Friedlander.

Mr Cuthbert East, who for ten years has been a member of the literary staff of the " Lyttelton Times," has been appointed to the editorship of the Titnaru " Post," in succession to Mr C. Newnham. Mr Francis Drake, R.N., secretary to Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition, left by the Moeraki yesterday for Sydney. At Sydney, Mr Drake will join tho Orontes for London, where he will transact a largo amount of .business connected with the expedition, returning to New Zealand in time to go South with the Terra Nova in November next.

Tho Hon D. Buddo, M.P., and tho Hon. J. T. Paul were passengers for Wellington by the Maori last night. Tho Rev and Mrs W. Laine and Mr and Mrs C. C. Davis were passengers by the Maori for Wellington last night. Messrs A. S. Biss, L. Prebblc, . Reecc, E. C. Closs and G. W. S. Bell left for Wellington by the Maori last night. , ■ Professor M'Millan Brown left for Svdnoy by the Moeraki yesterday. On Wednesday evening the Rev H. S. Leach was inducted to the euro of Sumner bv Archdeacon Gosset. Canon Sedgwick "and the Rev E. K. Mules were present, and took part in the service. The sermon for the occasion i was preached by Archdeacon Gosset, and suitable psalms and hymns were I sung. There was a large attendance. I Mr A. B. Charters, who has been 1 appointed inspector under the Wellington Education Board, was the holder of a scholarship at Christ's College, and for some years held a position under the North Canterbury Board. Later ho was apnointed headmaster of I the District High School, Greytown. He graduated for his B.A. and M.A. decrees at Victoria College, Wolhngj ton. Mr Charters is recognised by his I contemporaries as a most capable i teacher, and possesses a personality 1 which enables him to got quickly into touch with pupils and teachers alike. Ho is commanding officer of the. second Battalion 9th New , Zealand In- , fantry Regiment, saw service in South I Africa and is a keen c.itizen soldier.
