SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

A monthly meeting of the Sproydon School Committee wes held on Tuesday evening. The headmaster reported that the average attendance was 244, with a roll number of 280, which was somewhat lower, owing to the prevalence of influenza amongst tho children. Several repairs and alterations had been effected which were much needed. The Spreydon Domain Board applied for the use of the school for Tuesday, September 12, which was granted, subect to conforming with tho rules of the Education Board regarding insurance.

A montlily meeting of the Wharenui School Committee was held on Monday. The Education Board wrote saying that repairs to basins and downpipe were being attended to, and that a sub-committee of the Board would visit the school and inspect likely sections needed for the extension of tho school grounds. Accounts for £4 3s 1 were passed for payment. Tho chairman and Messrs Young and Gudsell wore appointed a sub-committce to arrange a tariff for the hire of tlie school rooms for public meetings, and for insurance to cover such meetings. Receipts from a lantern lecture given by one of the teachers, Mr "Williams, amounting to £4, were received, and Mr Williams was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided to ask the Waimairi County Council to nominate Mr J. Hanna as trustee for the County Council on the Board of Trustees in whom tho Coronation Bath is to be vested, and Mr J. J. Young was recommended as nominee by the Wharonui School Committee. The plans and specifications of the Bath Committee were accepted, and tlie Works Committee was authorised to call for tenders. Messrs Palmer and. Efford were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month.

A monthly meeting of the Soutlihridgo District High School Committee was held on Monday evening- The chairman reported, that the school children lnid subscribed a sum of £1 2s 3d towards the T. E. Taylor Memorial Fund. The R ev It. W. Jackson wrote, in reply to a letter received from the committee, stating that his intention to resign his seat on the committee was quite conclusive. Mr Jackson having failed to attend for three consecutive meetings, his seat on the committee was declared to havo been forfeited, and Mr E. A. Inwood was appointed to fill the vacancy. J n hj s monthly report the headmaster stated that tlio attendance in the primary department had been 91-1 per cent and in the secondary department 94.8 per cent. There had been a marked improvement in the attendance of pupils in the primary dopartment, while tho average maintain” ed in the secondary department had boon exceedingly satisfactory. During the month the cadets had been in* spec ted, and the sergeant-major - had expressed himself as being pleased with the marked improvement shown. The school gai dons had all been nicely laid out and should be productive of good results. He suggested that tho plants should be judged before the Christmas vacation, ' ' 1
