BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION.

ST MARTIN’S. .meeting of the residents pf tst Martin s W ard was held on Moiidav night to receive reports from the various provisional committees appointed at the inauguration of the St Martin’s Burgesses’ Association. Mr F. Ander-, ®on, jun., was elected to the chair. Ihe election of office-bearers resulted as follows President, Mr H. R. M ade; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Wilding, A. Anderson, sen., J. Buxton. OUivier, R. Malcolm, W. Murray. J. Parsons and the Hon G: J. Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr James W. Hunter; executive, Messrs Longton, Wilson and Sped ding ■ honorary auditor, Mr C. A. Saunders. The various committees appointed ai tho previous meeting were re-appoint-ed, with the following additional names on tho Improvement and Beautifying Committee .-—Messrs J. Parsons, P. Tench, Partridge and Barkar. The Improvement and Beautifying Committee reported that it had decided to approach the City Council in regard to the widening of the Waltham Road from the brewery to Wilson’s Bridge. Others matters of interest were mentioned by the committee, and it was decided to leave tho matters in the committee’s hands to report to next monthly meeting. The Rules Committee submitted a set of rules, which were unanimously adopted, and the Gas Committee reported that it had met with much encouragement from the residents of the district in canvassing for signatures towards bringing gas into the district. The Tramways Committee reported that it had met and adopted the following resolution :—“ That in the opinion of this sub-committee it is desirable to obtain the electric tram taken down Palsgrave Street from the electric power-house to Thackeray Street, thence from B.unyan Street to Walfctham Road, via Wilson’s Road, to the foot of tlie hills.” It was decided to obtain the. cooperation of the Opawa and Hillsborough Wards in agitating for the electric tram, and in the event of the poll about to be taken in the Hillsborough Ward being unfavourable, to proceed to 'work at once on their own account. Messrs Wade, Wilson and Ferrier were appointed a deputation to wait on the Gas Company with a proposal to bring tlie gas main into the St Martin’s district, either by way of Waltham Road or Tennyson Street, Beckenham. It was decided to forward a letter to the City Council, suggesting that it should arrange with the Gas Company to take its mains down Waltham Read to Wilson’s Bridge while the road was being widened, thus avoiding pulling up the road again in a short time. WOOLSTON. A monthly meeting of the Woolston Burgesses’ Association wns held on Monday night, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, when Mr J. A. Carlyle presided over a good attendance. Several resolutions were passed ana forwarded to the Woolston Borough Council for consideration at- the next meeting of tlie Council. It was decided to send a letter, to the Lyttelton Harbour Board asking it to fix new stakes in that portion of the river Heatlicote under' its control in place of the broken ones, which were a menace to boats plying up and down the stream when the tide was rip. It wns decided to write to Mr C. H. Opie. Mayor of New Brighton, asking for information regarding tho rivercleansing'; conference.
