AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last evening; present—Messrs R. English (president). Vf. E. Mills,', F. W. Johnston, R. B. Walker, D._ Crosier, G. P- Macfarlane, Drs W. Hamilton Simpson, Neeley and Louissan and Mr E. Nordon (secretary)-Twenty-five • new members were elected. Letters were received from Messrs G. Witty, T. E. Taylor, T-. H. Davey and G. Laurenson, members of Parliament, promising their support to the Association and the Chamber of Commerce in their efforts to induce the Government to widen the Otira Bridge for coaching traffic. The Prime Minister also wrote in connection with the same matter, stating that the request had been referred to the Minister of Roads and Bridges. The Rcyai Automobile Club, England, wrote pointing out the benefits to members of the Canterbury Association visiting England it the Association were affiliated, to the Royal Club. It was decided to affiliate, and the president and secretary were directed to affix their signatures to the draft agreement which had been forwarded. A communication was received from the Cab Owners’ Union asking for the Association’s support in opposing the traffic by-laws recently brought into force by the City Council. Tho Association decided to.take no action in the matter. Messrs R. English. F. W. Johnston, A. Morten, D. Crozier and the secretary, with power to add to tlieir number, were appointed a committee to make arrangements for motor-cars for the Domains Board's fete. Mr N. C. Gilchrist wrote thanking the Association for tho courteous treatment accorded to him by tho members of the Association during the reliability trials. . In reply to a letter from the Association the Christchurch City Council wrote stating that it was taking legal advice concerning the complaint in regard to the conduct of cyclists and the drivers of vehicles when being overtaken by motorists. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to present the gold medal of tho Association to Mr W. E. Mills, the judge of the recent trials, in recognition of the manner in which he had carried out his duties. A motion was carried to the effect that the- members of the Association should hold a motor-car picnic to Ashley Gorge at an earlv date, and it was also resolved to hold a hill-climbing competition on Hackthorn© Road about the end of March, the arrangements to be made by the secretary.
