PIONEER WORK.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —You have suggested that those people who contributed to the prosperity of .this country should be rewarded. It was tho wool growers, who 2>rovided cargoes for ships in the early days, it was they who brought much good stock to this country and tried many experiments, such as deep ploughing, which sometimes failed; it was they who produced the nucleus of tbe trade that has grown and brought prosperity. You have not stated what reward these men or their descendants fhould receive from the hands of a grateful people. Have you ever tried pioneer work on the frontiers of the British Empire? Mob law is a different matter. It argues sometimes on this wise, that as some New Zealanders have gone to the rich and newly discovered goldfields in Australia, therefore all Now Zealanders should receive some benefit therefrom when we can enforce our rights.—l am, etc., D. De B. HOVELL.
