Tho first day of the Hawke's Bay Jockoy Club’s Winter Meeting was held to-day, at Hastings, when there was only a fair attendance. The weather was fino till late in the-aiternoon, when tho wind became piercingly cold and rein sot in, the last two races beuiy run in showers. Campbell) were thrown, and had each a collarbone broken, while in tho Steeplcchaso Jack Pot hit the eod wall, and canio down heavily and broke his neck. His rider. The positions' remained practically unchanged to the double at the back of tho course, where Eurus got rid of his rider. Passing the stand the first time tho order was Sir Lethe, Prospector, Audax, Jack Pot. Going round the second time Sir Lethe unseated bis rider at tho brush, leaving Jack Pot in the lead, with Audax second. At tho last double Audax was slightly in front and going strong. Jack Pot fell at the sod wall. This left Audax nothing to boat, and ho cantered homo a furlong in front -of Prospector, these being the only two left in the race. Time —Grain 42sec.
