SIR JOHN HALL SHIELD,

LIFE-SAVING COMPETITION

The second annual life-saving competition among schoolboys for the Sir John Hall shield took'place yesterday afternoon, at tlio Sydenham School baths. There was a large gathering, in which schoolboys, predominated. Tho competition consisted of land drills tor resuscitation and demonstrations of tho methods of release from the clutch of a drowning person. Tho releases- were also effected in the water among the members of each team, the “ drowning person ” being towed ashore by tho other swimmer. This part of the work was by far tho most interesting, as tho land drills were unduly long and monotonous.

Five teams of four boys each entered, representing the Sydenham, Lyttelton, West Christchurch, Richmond and Waltham schools. Tho work of tho Sydenham team, tho holders of tho shield, under the direction of Air C. Schneider, was highly meritorious, and much better than that of the other teams, being remarkable for speed in th© water and celerity ashore. This team was placed first. The Lyttelton team, under Air B. Rhind, secured second place, and "West Christchurch, under Air C. W. Allard, was third. The names of the winning team are: —4V. Wilshire, L. Guy, K. Kirk and S. Hunt, and those of the second team are H. Leivin, W. Brown, A. Sinclair and J. Laurenson.
