LYTTELTON STREETS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —As a ratepayer of Lyttelton I wish to remind the Mayor and Borough Councillors that there is such a place as Salt’s Gully in the borough. Last winter the roads and streets (or ruts) were in a disgraceful condition, three inches of mud in places, with storm water crossing down in all directions. Then coming down into London Street, the principal shopping street, we are compelled to take the centre of the road, for tho footpath, after every heavy rain is a veritable quagmire, down as far ns the junction of Dublin Street. This is due to slips and drainage from a clay bank hard by. To littlo children going to school there is a source of considerable danger. I personally rescued a little one after the last heavy rain from what might have proved a" serious accident. It is high time that we had ward representation on our Council, for at present, half our councillors being west enders, that portion of the borough seems to monopolise their attention. Wo do not expect asphalted footpaths nor regraded roads,' but we certainly think that we are entitled to sufficient fine shingle on all footpaths and particularly crossings. Trusting that these little matters, together with tho approach to London Street, will receive the attention of our present progressive Mayor and councillors, before the next winter sets in.— I am, etc., W. N.
