CONSUMPTION SANATORIUM.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln answer to his Worship th® Mayor's statement that, upon inquiring at the secretary’s office he learned that there were only twelve applicants so far for admission to the sanatorium, I wish to say, in justice to “ Broken-hearted Mother"’’ that I also applied to the secretary fcj information, and he told me without reserve that there wore one hundred applications in already, and more coming every day fr.om all over Canterbury; and he wearily added that there was accommodation for only fifteen men and fifteen women. I would willingly publish my name and address, but, "by doing so, I might prejudice my clianoa of admission to _the sanatorium". They say this is God's own country, but Hu temporal representatives here below ar? so sensitive about their authority thai they might not care to be contradicted, although the statement be gospel truth. I am very pleased to read that tliers will be ample accommodation for aH who desire admission. When so much money lias been collected it is only tb* humane duty of those concerned is building the sanatorium to see that our poor tuberculosis patients, stricken mei and women, are given every chance fra regain good health, the greatest gift of all, so that they may have the right t’s work and enjoy life side by side with their fellow-citizens. One feature of tuberculosis is that the patient is always hopeful: therefore, I hope tht> sanatorium will bo opened as soon xa possible, and that no effort will bw spared to have enough shelters ready for all who apply. I also beg that the os* amining medical officer will give everyone possible a chance, if only lor the sixteen weeks. Although that period would not cure some, yet th#y would lie greatly benefited by the change and proper treatment. In conclusion, I would suggest that the repulsive and barbaric title consumption be deleted, and tuberculosis sanatorium substituted instead, as has been done in the case of other similar institutions.—T am. etc., ONLY A WOMAN.
