Sir G. Reid, concluding his speech at the banquet, said that be might say another thing—namely, that an insinuation that Australia’s loyalty was mixed with tho fiscal question, and depended on the Motherland’s answer to the questions of preference and reciprocity, was an unfounded slander-. (Cheers.) Any new departure would have to ho based on the conviction that it embodied an advantage to, and the strengthening of, tho Motherland and Australia alike. Tho Australians would scorn it if it wero made at the expense of tho Motherland.

Tho “ Timos ” hopes that ,Lord Crowe’s remark foreshadows that the affairs of the dominions are coming un der tho immediate cognisance of the Premier. Lord Crewe, who presided at tho banquet to Sir George Reid, said in tho course of his speech that tho present arrangement, by which the Secretary of State for tho Colonies bad the supervision of the affairs of the dominions, was nob likely to be permanent.
