CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
ST LAWRENCE WATER POWER
A J.ARIFF WAR THREATENED. tTnited Press Association—By Elcctrio Telegraph—Copyright OTTAWA, March 16
The Canadian House of Commons had a twenty-five hours' sitting. The> Opposition refused to pass tho St Lawrence Power Transmission Company's Bill on the ground that it was calculated to exploit the water power in tho river for the benefit of United States speculators.
While shrewd observers at Washington are still hopeful that President Taft will yield to the advice of tho Commissioners sent to Canada, tho authorities at Ottawa apprehend that a trade war with the United States is imminent. It is stated that if America imposes the maximum, Canada will reply with a surtax of thirty-three and a third per cent, and prohibit the export of pulp wood and wood pulp.
