INDUSTRIES WEEK.

As “ Industries Week ” proceeds, the number of firms exhibiting New Zea-land-made goods is increasing, the movement apparently having the sympathy of all classes of retailers and traders. Many manufacturing firms have thrown their factories open to the public, and they had a great many visitors yesterday. Some of the great soft-goods warehouses are adopting n similar plan, and the public has taken advantage of the opportunities offered to a considerable extent. The interest displayed by the public generally has been a, notablo and welcome feature of this year’s “ Industries , Week ” and augurs well for the success of the projects which the Canterbury Industrial Association had in ylew when it inaugurated the movement. • Large numbers of people have taken advantage of the fact that the Lyttel Times ” premises have been thrown open to tho public during “ Industries Week,” and many visitors have become acquainted with tho marvels of the modern newspaper press and its many inventions. The wonderful type-set-ting machines, with movements that seem to bo directed almost by human intelligence, have probably attracted most interest, but all the processes in the complex work of issuing a daily newspaper have been closely studied. Yesterday about fifty pupils from Airs Croasdaile Bowen’s girls’ school spent most of tho morning on the promises. (Published by Arrangement.) THE KAIAPOI WOOLLEN COMPANY’S DISPLAY. The destruction by fire of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company’s Cashel Street warehouse some seventeen months ago was in one sense a distinct benefit both to the company and to tho city, for it cleared the way for the erection of the magnificent warehouse which has recontly been built, on Manchester Street. This fine building, with its rich and dignified architecture and spacious proportions, enables the company to display the products of the famous Kaiapoi Mills very much more effectively and conveniently than was the case in the old warehouse. The enormous stocks which are carried necessitate a vast amount of floor space for their storage alone, andthis has been adequately provided for on the three floors and basement of the new warehouse, while the departments devoted to packing goods for delivery to customers and to preparing material for factory use are no longer hampered hv cramped quarters. Floor space has not been the only consideration, however, in tho new building. Although only comprising three storeys, the' building is loftier than the majority of four storey buildings, with the result that every department is radiant with light, and tho air within tho walls is as pure and sweet as that without. It is in every way a model warehouse, and. forms a fitting storehouse for'the splendid fabrics turned out by the mills and the multitudinous articles of apparel which pour in a steady stream from the great factory at the rear. In every detail of interior fitting and equipment the warehouse is thoroughly up to date. A complete electric lighting and power plant has been installed, driven by an 80 h.-p. Diesal oil engine of the latest pattern, and throughout a duplicate gas and electric lighting service has been fitted. Risk of undetected fire is obviated by the instalment of an extensive series -of thermostatic fire detectors, a system which, in the event of fire automatically gives alarm to the fire brigade,, and shows on an indicator at the front' of the building the exact locality of the outbreak. The office fittings are comfortable and artistic, and quite in keeping with the note of solidity and dignity struck-in the architecture of the Alanchester Street facade. As an instance of the ingenuity and up-to-dateness of the office system, it may be mentioned that the manager is able at any time of the day to ascertain tho exact location in the dominion of any or all of the numerous travellers of the firm, flags bearing their names being distributed over a largo map of the colony, and giving tho required information at a glance. In honour of “ Industries Week ” a spocial display of a variety of the company’s, leading lines has heen made just insido the entrance to the warehouse, but this display is merely a, kind of rough index to the contents of the warehouse, and'it is necessary to visit every part of the establishment to gain any kind of conception of the vast range of articles and materials supplied by the firm. On the first floor at ordinary times the eye is struck by the magnificent display of all-wool travelling rugs—-rugs that have made New ‘Zealand famous all the world over. The quality of .those rugs has always been such as to render improvement impossible, but ill .the designing of patterns great- advances have been made. The present stocks include rugs in which, the most beautiful and artistic colour schemes have been carried out, while the coming of the .motorist is signalised bv a great variety of motorrugs, with plain waterproof facings in various shades and attractively patterned on the under-side. Blankets, of a quality unsurpassed anywhere are also a featuro of this department, and also comprehensive lines of flannels, twilled flannel plaidings, ' Kaiapoi blouses and fingering wools, Of the smart and artistic get-up of these goods it is impossible to speak too highly.

The costume and mantle showroom gives evidence of the degree of enterprise and perseverance exercised by tho company in the introduction aud development-of fashionable ladies’ garments in New Zealand. For excellence of material and beauty of design the Kaiapoi “tailor-made” garments stand unrivalled. In coats and skirts the fashion is different to that of past reasons, the “ Directoire ” mode being largely followed. These garments include some charming effects in saxo blue, and the "new peacock green shades. There is a tremendous variety of jackets, sacque-shaped topcoats, rain-coats, macintoshes, and evening coats, and a splendid range of dress tweeds, costume cloths, serges and faced cloths is shown in all tho latest colourings and effects. In the tailoring tweeds department the ComSany shows some of its very finest proucts. Space only permits mention of the new Harris tweed effects. The peculiar rough yet smart appearance of the Harris tweed has been exactly reproduced, and the colours and patternings are stylish and effective. Even tho distinctive odour of these tweeds, somewhat reminiscent of heather, has been, attained. The clothing department shows ei bewildering range of men’s and boys’ ready-to-wear clothing, all mode from tweeds and cloths of undoubted quality in one of the best .equipped and organised factories in the Southern Hemisphere. To meet a growing demand the factory is supplying factory-made to order suits on the chart system, at very reasonable prices. An attractive displav is made of military uniforms of all descriptions, tho Company making a specialty of uniform contracts, and a still finer specialty of mounted infantry uniforms saddle The hat and cap department has grown from small aiid obscure beginnings to a very important branch of the factory’s activities. Thero are men’s cloth caps in every style, shape and material, and ladies’ motor caps

iii navy, cream maroon, and green cloths and also in tweed effect-s, ’ the shapes vary from the “ mushroom ” with turned down hard brims to softer turned up brims with crush tops. Tho hosiery and shirt department products show throughout those qualities of thoroughness and care in manufacture and excellence of material which characterise the Company’s operations in every detail. Men's and ladies’ hosiery, men’s shirts in a multitude of styles, ladies’ divided skirts, boys’ navy jerseys and an extensive variety of pyjamas and pyjama clothe are some of tho principal features of the wares in this department. In every case the canons of art and of fashion have heen studiously adhered to and the goods are in every respect up-to-date. The factory requires a special descriptive article all to itself. It need only be said that tho lightness and airiness characteristic of the warehouse are also features of tho factory workrooms. The building is_ a threestorey one and comprises 52,272 square feet of floor space. The hundreds of workers within its walls are assisted in their labours by the most up-to-date machinery and each department is so organised that results are obtained in the most economical and expeditious manner possible. . • The . Company’s mills at Kaiapoi are situated on grounds ton acres in extent. Within the last few years tho mills have been practically rebuilt, the entire plant has been remodelled, all old machinery “scrapped” and replaced by the very best, swiftest and most modern woollen manufacturing machinery yet invented. Visiting manufacturers. from Britain and the Continent have assured the principals that they have a mill plant that could not bo bettered on similar lines in • any country. With such mills, and with such a factory and with the finest wool supply in the world to draw upon it is not surprising that the Kaiapoi Woollen Company is able to show within its warehouse, goods that must inspire pride in tho heart of any Now Zealander who has a spark of patriotic or national feeling within his body.
