SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Selwyn County Council met yesterday ; present—Alessrs W. Dunlop (chairman), G. Withy, M.P., R. H. Rhodes, ALP., G. Scott, K. Wilson, G. Bedford, J.: Wolfe, J. Storry and T. D. Boag. The Water-race Committee’s report was adopted. It recommended among other things that no further work should be done at the Waimakariri Gorge race until some definite scheme was decided on. A letterfrom the . Weber County Council, suggesting that power 'should be asked for to take timber under the Public Works Act, for burning papa for roads, was referred to the county conference, the' Council’s delegates being requested to support it. The chairman was elected trustee of the Christchurch Domains Board, in place of Air H. A. Pitman, who had resigned. The Hospital Board wrote stating that the allocation for the Selwyn County Council for the year for hospital maintenance in the district \?as £4479 18s Bd. The charitable aid allocation was stated to be £1823 18s Bd. It was resolved to levy a rate of four twenty-fifths of a penny in the pound to meet the allocations.' The Drainage Board wrote agreeing to the Council’s proposal that the Board should pay one-third of the cost of cleaning a portion of the Styx River. It was resolved to accept the Board’s decision for ouo year, but to write stating that owing to large alterations to the drainage of the district the Council would expect a readjustment at the end of the year. The request of the Avon Road Board that the Council should take over the Kaputone Creek was agreed to, the bhairman suggesting that a special area should be constituted and a special rate struck fe- ; ' S cleaning.

A letter was received from certain Mead settlers, guaranteeing a sum lof £ls. towards the cost of a telephone, and asking the Council to make up the sum to the amount of the £l9 required.
