. Mr Robert Bell returned to Ashbucton yesterday. Mr Felix Walk and Mr E. Nercauer, of Antwerp, arrived in. Christchurch yesterday. Mr.A. S. Fry left for Dunedin by steamer yesterday. The Hon G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, arrived in Christchurch by the first express last evening, and went on to Wellington. Mr S. Mirams went south by the first express yesterday, and Mr J. A. Nioholl and Mr P. M'Laughlin left Christchurch by the north express yesterday. Among the visitors who arrived in Christchurch yesterday were Mr S. C. Hodges (London), Mr G. H. F. Rolleston (Wellington), Mr G. W. M'Ewan (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Hodgkins (Northumberland), and Mr W. Pryor (Wellington). . Mr N. D. Cochrane, mining engineeT of Dunedin, has accepted the position of mining adviser to the Government of Fiji. lie expects to bo absent from tho'dominion about twelve months. The Prime Minister informed a reporter at Dunedin yesterday that tho Valuation Department will be merged with the Land and Income Tax Department. Mr P. Hoyes will take over the position of Valuer-General in addition to his present duties. The Dunedin correspondent of the " Lyttelton Times" writes that Lieu-tenant-Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, a member of the Instructional and Military Examination Board for the dominion, will have charge of the defence during a year's absence in Great Britain of Colonel Davies, C.B. On Monday evening the members of the Rangiora Oddfellows' Glee Party held a social gathering at the residence of their conductor, Mr G. GibbsJordan, as a farewell to Mr H. O. Wilson, ono of their who is about to leave Rangiora to join the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association's Christchurch office staff. A parting gift of a silver teapot was made to the guest.. The late Mr John Walsh, who died at his residence at Southbridgo on Friday, was born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1811. He arrivfS in New Zoaland in 1876, going to Southbridrre, whoro he resided until his death. The funeral took place on Monday, and was largely attended. Requiem moss was celebrated at St Joseph's Church, Southbridge. by the Rev Father Hills, who also officiated at the grave.
