THE LYTTELTON MAYORALTY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Seeing that no mention was made in your report of mv meeting last Thursday evening that I denied the statement that had been so freely circulated “that I had been persuaded to come forward to fight another man’s battle,” I .must ask you to publish my letter. 1 stated at that mooting I had been asked to come forward by very prominent and respected electors of the borough, and that, after making inquiries as to wliat support I was likely to get, I considered it my duty to allow mysolf to be nominated for the | office. ' I also stated that I was only j claiming ray right in so doing, as a ! retiring Mayor has no more claim to ' tho office than any other eligible per- | eon. It is for the electors to choose who shall represent them in that ca- ' paoity. The* Mayor of Lyttelton has a seat on the Harbour Board. I stated at the meeting that T was opposed to tho Board having anything to do with the Sumner canal scheme, as I considered there is no need for a canal while wo have such good accommodation as we have at Lyttelton. Also that the Board should carry out the Proposed reclamation work outside of the westera breakwater, and so provide accommodation for the building of workshops and factories, so that some of our enterprising city manufacturers may he induced to build in Lyttelton, and so be able to compete with other parts of the dominion, which they say they cannot do at present.—l am. etc.. , •T. R. WEBB. [ Lyttelton, April 21.
