THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

Messrs H. Hunter and A. D. Hart, Labour candidates for the City Council, addressed a meeting of electors of the Sydenham ward at the corner of Colombo and Sandyford Streets on Saturday evening. There were about two hundred persons present, and Mr James Wilson was in the chair. The candidates were given a patient hearing, and were accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence. Mr C-. Allison will address the electors at the Foresters 1 Hall, Oxford Terrace, to-morrow, at S p.m. Mr H. H. Loughnan, who will contest the Mayoralty of Christchurch, will give an address in the Choral Hall at eight o’clock this evening. Mr F. N. Bartram will address the electors at the corner of Montreal and Conference Streets at 7.45 p.m. to-day. Mr J. J. Dougall, who is a candidate for the Central Ward of the city, will address a meeting in the Caledonian Society’s rooms at eight o’clock this evening. • , —. i TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l was very pleased to read in. the columns of your valuable paper this morning a letter by “ Ratepayer.” He seems to have struck .the nail on the head when he mentions the “ plausible gentlemen who are trying to further their own interests by obtaining seats on the Borough Council.” Let the electors of Lyttelton inquire very closely into tho reasons why some of the present councillors are trying to get rid of those gentlemen who form the present Finance Committee. Messrs S. R. Webb, T. W. Anderson, W. T. Foster and J. R. Webb (Finance Committee) are men who can be thoroughly relied on to keep the borough finance in a sound condition, and the electors will be wise in retaining the services of such men to safeguard their interests. I was pleased to see that Mr J. T. Norton had been nominated as a candidate for a seat on our Borough Council. Those who know him feel sure that, if elected, he will prove himself an acquisition of no mean order. It was Messrs Norton and Foster who first brought forward a motion to acquire and improve Corsair Bay, with the result that it is now a popular holiday resort, thoroughly appreciated by our own townspeople and those living on the other side of the hill. These gentlemen have always been in the fore to further any scheme that was for the advancement of Lyttelton,, and I sincerely hope that they with the before-mentioned gentlemen will be elected.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER No. 2. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—l notice that Messrs Williams and Hyde are candidates for the St Albans Ward in connection with the above election. I would like to-ask both of these gentlemen a question, before polling day comes off. Some time ago both of them were asked publicly to raise in the Council the question of laying the high water pres- ; sure pipes in the side channels, which was, at that time, a question about which a good deal of correspondence was written to the public Press. We j would be pleased to know from Messrs ! Williams and "Hyde what they did in reference to this matter, and whether . they did raise the question, as request- ! ed. Ido not know whether they did so or not. As St Albans residents we should like to have, a reply, through your, valued columns, from the above gentlemen before polling day calls for the votes.—l am, etc., HYGIENE. TO THE EDITOR Sir,—ln your published report of tho ratepayers’ meeting held at St Sa- i viour’a Schoolroom on Friday last, you t have done me an injustice, by simply stating that I am not in favour of the canal scheme. What I did state was that I would not support any scheme until ,the question had been thoroughly investigated, and with a view to this being done, would favour steps being taken to have the constitution of the Lyttelton Harbour Board altered so that it would better represent tho interests of tho people of Christchurch. And when this had been aeeompUshed j that body would make an estimate of j the cost, in making the necessary Lc- j eom.modation for the shipping at Lyttelton, including an extra tunnel, if necessary, and bringing the whole of the services up-to-date. Also the cost of constructing a canal from Sumner to Christchurch. Then tho whole question could bo placed before the public and a vote taken to decide the matter.—l am, etc.. CHARLES TAYLOR. I
