The Hon G Fowlds arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday, and went south by the first express. Mr R. E. Alexander, who has been appointed Director of the Agricultural College at Lincoln, will arrive in New Zealand early next month. Mr Duthie, president of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was tendered a send-off by tho members on the evo of a visit to tho Old Country. The Rev Father O’Donnell, who is leaving on a trip to Ireland, after fifteen years’ labour in Gore, was last night presented with 200 guineas from the congregation and a gold watch and chain from the citizens. Captain C. S. Hodge, a, well-known master mariner, residing at Port Chalmers, died yesterday, aged seventyseven years. Ho came to New Zealand in 1864, and retired from the sea in 1892. At the Magistrate’s Court at Oxford yesterday, Mr A. C. Pritchard, the senior Justice of tho Peace, welcomed Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., to the district, and wished him a pleasant term of office. The employees of the Smitbfield Freezing Works assembled on April 1 to make a presentation to Mr E. -T. Worsdell, on his retirement from the position of foreman. A marble clock was presented to Mr Worsdell by Mr J. McLaren, who spoke in appreciative terms of tho relations that had existed between Mr Worsdell and those under him.
