LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
PURCHASE OF ORARI GORGE ESTATE. On Wednesday last the Government completed the purchase of tho Orari Gorge Estate from the trustees of the lato Mr C. G. Tripp for closer settlement. Tho estate consists of about 8000 acres of freehold and 17,000 acres of Crown leasehold. It was one of the first station properties taken up in South Canterbury, having been selected by the lato Mr C. G. Tripp in partnersiiip with the late lion J. B. Acland on May 10, 1856. The same gentlemen took up the Mount Somers, Mount Peel, Mount Possession and JumpedUp Downs Stations, but theso properties, with the exception of Mount Peel, have long • since passed into other hands. The Orari Gorge Station and the Mount Peel Station are said to bo tho only two runs in. Canterbury that still remain in the names of the original holders. A large part of the freehold on the Orari Gorge Station will cut up into small dairy farms, and tho rest will make excellent pastoral farms of larger area. Tho trustees will give delivery of the property in March of next year.
[Per Press Association.] TIMARU, April 22. Mr T. Buxton, M.P., has received information that the Government has bought 8000 acres of freehold and 17.000 acres of leasehold of Tripp’s Orari Gorge Estate. Delivery will he given in March next.
