A NEW WHARF FOR SUMNER.
TO THE EDITOJI. Sir, —The report presented to tho Lytteiton Harbour Board last week byMr Cyrus Williams contains the germ of a good idea. Mr Williams estimates the cost of n new wharf outside the breakwater in Lytteiton harbour at about £15,000. As this wharf, if constructed, would be subject, to a very large degree, to the influence of the wind and the »ea, why not erect it at Sumner ? The proposed canal Is not likely to he made for a few years at least. The "hole in the hill" is becoming more malodorous year by year. The Government is apparently indifferent to the discomfort and inconvenience caused to passengers travelling between Christchurch and Lytteiton, and cannot be prevailed upon to improve the ventilation of the tunnel or electrify the line, consequently a sea wharf and promenade at Sumner would be just the thing. It would shorten the trip to Wellington by an hour, which would be an advantage. Our Tramway Board could double the line to Sumner and run the passengers to and from the steamera in half an hour, which would be another advantage. _No more dirty tunnel and suffocating atmosphere. Beautiful, bright, electric cars, and plenty of invigorating fresh air. " Look here, upon this picture, and on this." What a prospect for Sumner. It would send that borough along by leaps and bounds. Its residents would be so busy and have so much to engage their attention that they would entirely forget their present principal pastime of worrying the Tramway Board. I mav enlarge upon this idea in a future letter.—-1 am, etc, C M..GRAY.
