A POPULAR RAILWAY OFFICER.

Mr Hunter Macandrew, District RailTray Engineer at Christchurch, who has been in charge of the maintenance branch of tho Canterbury section, of tb© New Zealand railways for the pact eight and a half years, was on Saturday presented by the staff with a very handsome solid silver tea and coffee service. Mr S. F. Whitcoonbe presided over a largo and representative gathering of railway men, and, in making the presentation, referred to the uniform courtesy and consideration always shown by the Teciuient to all members of the service. Mr Macandrew had displayed administrative ability of a high order and had carried out a very large number of important works to such satisfaction that the Department now intended to make further use of his ability by sending him to the Otago district, where railway improvement works of considerable magnitude are in progressSeveral members of the maintenance staff spoke feelingly of the invariable kindness shown them by Mr Macandrew and one and all wished him and his family happiness and prosperity In their new home. Mr Macandrew, in reply, thanked the staff for the present, and referred to th© happy relations which had existed between them, which he attributed to the good qualities of the officers and men themselves. Ho very much regretted that he was leaving Christchnrch, and such a lot of good fellows. Mt C. Holm Biss, who succeeds Mr Macandrew at Christchurch, was introduced by the chairman, and tho proceedings terminated with hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs Macandrew and family.
