SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The monthly meeting of the New Brighton School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr P. G. Withers presiding. A letter was received from the Education Board, stating that it could not grant the committee's application for additions to tho schoolmaster's quarters. The headmaster reported that the total number of scholars for the previous week was 314. Tho average attendance for 1907 had been 251.9. Twonty-two new scholars had been added to the roll since tho reopening of the school. The School Gala Committee submitted a balance-sheet showing a credit balance of £ll 3s 7d, and it was decided to allocate £3 to the cadet fund and £8 3s 7d to the annual prize fund. On the headmaster's application permission was given for a class of girls to_ attend cookery lessons under one of tho teachers. It was decided to make application to the Education Board for the services of an additional pupil teacher. The secretary was instructed to forward a copy of a resolution to the Education Beaid expressing satisfaction with a recent addition to the school and the installation of dual desks, and stating that the new room would bo at once fully occupied owing to the rapid advance in the numbers attending, the roll having reached a total of 318, and an attendance on Wednesday, February o, of 300, the highest on record for the school. The monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi District High School Committee was held on Monday evening. A letter was read from the headmaster, asking that a holiday should be given in recognition of the fact that all the candidates presented for outside examinations had passed, several with distinction. The request was granted and the committee decided to congratulate the teaching .staff on the high standard of success obtained at the examinations. It was reported that Miss Sullivan had gained a national scholarship and Master Rowland Packwood had been placed ninth •on the list of the Civil Service examination. Miss Dalzell, Sefton, was recommended for appointment as a pupilteacher.

A meeting of the Ashburton Borough School Committee was held on Moriday evening, Mr T. Hayes in the chair. Miss Eliza Knox was appointed a pupilteacher. It was decided to abandon the proposal to hold a garden party in connection with the school, as owing to the prevalence of epidemics during 1907 the attendance at the school had not been as satisfactory as it should have been under ordinary oirsumstanoes. The headmaster reported that the pump supply of water at both the main and side schools had given out, and it was decided to take steps to remedy the defect. The resignation of Mies Ormandy, assistant-mistress, was accepted, on the understanding that she should be relieved of her duties on March 1. Mr W. Craighead was elected to fill a vacancy on the oommitteo.

The monthly meeting of the Rangiora School Committee was held on Wednesday, the Rev F. P. Fendall presiding. The master reported a roll number of 334. and an average attendance of 300 for the week. A letter was received from the Education Board to the effect that the Public Health Officer having certified to infectious diseases of an epidemic character having affected the school attendance to at least 10 per cent, Miss Wilkinson'* services on the staff would be retained.

A meeting of the St Albans School Committee was held on Tuesday, Mr Cole presiding. The headmaster's report stated that there were 629 on the roll, with an average attendance of 566. A special committee, consisting of the officers and Mr Lucas, was appointed to adjust the accounts between the committee and the Elmwood School Committee. It was resolved to recommend the Education Board to appoint Mr Gamble to the vacant pupil-teach-ership in the school. A letter was ordered to be 6ent to the Board, thank-
