FARTHER SOUTH.

THE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. ARRIVAL OF THE NIMROD, THE VESSEL DESCRIBED. AN ACCOUNT OF THE VOYAGE The Antarctic expedition, of which so much ha 3 already been heard and read, has come out of the regions of project and is obviously a thing to be quickly realised. The Nirarod has arrived. At 3.30 p.m. on Saturday she was signalled froin the Heads, and at 4.45 p.m. she entered Lyttelton harbour. The tug Canterbury met her at the Heads, and the little vessel was put through the necessary ceremony of medical inspection. She 'then steamed into the inner -harbour, and was berthed ar No. 1 wharf. Lyttelton has been awaiting eagerly the arrival of the adventurous ship. Christ church has regarded the matter with a broader interest. Both have enjoyed a pleasant recrudescence of the enthusiasm with which the Discovery was regarded. The news that the Nimrod had been signalled went quickly round the port, and she became a leading topic. But when at last she came in, and when at sis o'clock she was berthed, her advent was stolidly regarded by two or three dozen people, mostly wharf hands and small boys. No wild enthusiasm was displayed. Her crew having been practically exiles for four months it might have been thought that there would at all events have been some demonstration of relief at the ending of the journey. But the crew smiled over the side, and the shore folks stood about in an' embarrassed silence* It was broken by an occasional "Hullo, Bill," or other greeting as enlivening and interesting. When the vessel lay comfortably alongside, however, the silence was broken. Some of those on the vessel had friends ashore ; the otheTs quickly made them. Captain England, who was chief officer of the Morning, was in especial demand, and the business of the ship had to wait while greetings were exchanged and the demands of tho§e claiming recognition wore met.
