Mr H. G. Ell, M.H.R., is at present in Christchurch, having been called from Wellington by news of the serious illness of his mother. Mr Ell expects to bo nere for several days. Among the arrivals in Christchurch yesterday were Messrs E. F. Walker (London), C. H. Seville (Auckland), A. Wiseman and J. G. Silly (Wellington) and Mr and Mrs Mo'iitgomery (Little River). Captains Willis and Greece arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Mararoa yesterday. An old Canterbury identity recently passed away in the person of Mrs Garrick, wife of the late Mr F. J. Garrick, a Christchurch solicitor. She was the daughter of Captain Peacock, one of the earliest voyagers. from Australia to New Zealand, and a sister of the late Hon J. T. Peacock, M.L.C. Mrs Garrick was known for many years as a lady of kindly and courteous temperament, alwas willing to assist publicly and privately in any charitable object. She was seventy-five years of age. Mr John Rennie (Doyleston) arrived from Wellington yesterday. The Canterbury Cricket Association last evening passed a vote of sympathy with the chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, the Hon E. C. J. Stevens, in his illness, and it was resolved that a letter should be sent to him expressing the Association's hope for his speedy recovery. Mr D. D. Macfarlane (Lyndon), Mr E. O'Conneil (Haylands) and Mr Hanmer Atkinson (Wocdbank) were in town yesterday. JuliusJeftJor„the West Coast
on Saturday, and will do engaged m visiting the parishes there for about a fortnight. The Rev Fathers Gilbert and Graham left for Wellington by the Mararoa yesterday evening.
