MATRIMONIAL TROUBLES.

ALLEGED THEFT. [Per Ph£ss Association.] DUNEDIN, July 23. At the Police Court yesterday, Mary Prentice and Sarah Jackson, mother and daughter, were charged with the theft-of a gold ring, a gold-mounted pendant, three white shirts, a singlet, a travelling-rug, two photographs and 7s 6d in money, of a total value of £4, from the dwelling of Herbert Jackson, of Riverton. Detective Herbert said that the police here knew nothing of the facts of the case, and ho would ask that tho accused should be remanded to appear at Riverton. Mr Hanlon, who appeared lor the accused, objected to the remand to Riverton. Defendants were mother and daughter, and the prosecutor was the husband of the daughter. Th© young lady stated that she had been subjected. \ to great cruelty at the hands of the prosecutor, and some proceedings were taken in Invercargill, and ultimately eke had to leave him altogether. The articles alleged to have been stolen (with tho exception of the whito shirts) were articles her husband had given to her while they were friendly and living together, and the wife had two or three articles in her possession which she took with her when she left her husband. This was a dispute between husband and wife. The mother had nothing to do with it, except that she went down and took her daughter away from th© cruelty of the husband. He nsked that a remand should be granted in Dunedin for eight days, in order that he might communicate with the prosecutor. The Magistrate thought that it would he just as well to give every chance possible for a private settlement of the case, which was remanded until July 29. _ The defendants were admitted to bail on sureties of £lO each and another surety of £lO in each caee.
