RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

TO THB EDIIOB. ' j Sir, —Kindly allow me space in you# columns to pen a few lines to add to the fire of criticism which has of late been aimed at our <£ up-to-date railway administration.” In the first place, much has been said, but little done, since the Banksid© collision* This is what has taken place: Meikle and Seaman, the men who were_ doing the work 'Under such trying circumstances and, according to the Department’s finding in then- inquiry, bearing all the responsibility, have got their dismissal. That this is correct Still sticks in the public throat, and anyone with a slight knowledge of railway working knows that there was a gross injustice done when- these men got their “ walking tickets.” Thou, in connection with the Lyttelton accident, the blame was (as per usual) attributed to the workman, who was also pushed out of the “ golden circle,” . while I liave it on authority that) Driver Hill was the victim of mor* than hard luck. This being so, it is a matter of wonder and surprise that the officers who conducted the inquiry could, with all their experience, coma to the decision they did. Seemingly, allowance is made for nothing, and not even bare justice given in these “ goldbraided court-martials.” however, in all-such oases will never do* any good, but I think it is a matter for congratulation that several of our representatives in Parliament, judging by their speeches in the debate on the Address-in-Reply, are going to rise to the occasion and do their duty. This should bring about a much-desired result, in that it would provide capable officer , efficient in supervising .ndi controlling r ay working. Hoping that our M- .’s representations on behalf of the unfortunates left behind may result in a ‘‘clearer track ahead’* for the men, —I am. etc., W. J- MUGGINS-
