BOROUGH COUNCILS

KAIAPOI. A meeting. of the Kaiapoi Borough Counoil was held on Tuesday evening; present—The Mayor (Mr J. H. Blackwell), and Councillors Parnham, Eagle, Pearce, Hayman, Wylie, Midgley and Sullivan. The Mayor thanked councillors for their sympathy during hia recent illness. It was resolved that Thursday should be observed as the weekly half-hol.day. The Christchurch Domain Board wrote, soliciting assistance towards maintaining the Domain. The clerk was instructed to reply that Kaiapoi had two domains to maintain, and could not make a grant. The Fir© Prevention Committee’s letter, asking the Council to put .a sump in Black Street near Mr Keetley’s blacksmith shop, was referred to the Fire Committee for a report next meeting. A letter was received from Mr J. Higgins, foreman, asking f;r an increa e'in wages, and it was qecid d that his wages in future should be 9s per dav. The Cambridge Bridge was perfectly rotten, and a new structure would bo required. The committee was rskcd to prepare an estimate of requirements and probable cost by next meeting, and in the meantime it was decided that Mr Buddo should be written to requesting him to- visit the bridges. The Works Committee recommended "the formation of Cass Street East, and it was agreed to do the work. The receipts were reported* to have been £ll6 19s 6d. The credit balance stood at £162 16s 7d, and accounts for £B9 4s 5d were recommended for payment. The report was adopted. The tender of Mr T. ivnox for supply of d-g-collavs was accepted. It was decided to begin the work of kerbino- and channel ing Charts Street from the Post Office to Smith Street, and that the ratepayers should pay onehalf of the cost of the work.
