Tho law is to bo strictly enforced, and possibly similar action ■will be taken against the papers in tho other neighbouring States. (Received October 14, 5.13 a.m.) / . SYDNEY, October 14. A deputation .of bookmakers and turf commission agents asked tho Attorney-General that the law with regard to betting should) not bo enforced with respect to bets in connection with the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups until the latter ■ had been run. They were willing to loyally observe the law, but obligations had been entered into in connection with various doubles at the late Randwick and Melbourne meetings. Many client* who got a ‘‘leg in” at Randwick might desire to hedge or otherwise protect their position. Mr Wads replied that ho was aware tho Bill was severe. He was anxious not to do anything unnecessarily drastic. Without infringing the law ho was willing to allow

obligations already incurred to be mot by those who desired to meet them as debts of honour. He could not give adhesion to tho request in the form it was put, but he would consider it with a view to finding a way of alleviating alleged hardships.
