A CROSS-COUNTRY RACE
[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] -■WELLINGTON, October 13. The Wellington Harriers’ CrossCountry Championship distance about five miles, was decided this afternoon. Nine competed. The winners of the Championship and Sealed Handicap wore W, Bennett and W. Press respectively.
A HILL-CLIMBING CONTEST. The final competition for Dr Thacker’s cup for the .best all-round athlete in Mr- F. A; Hornibrook’s Bandow School, took place- on Saturday, the event being a foot race from the Colombo Road tram terminus to Governor’s Bay and back. Eleven competitors faced the starter, ’ and were despatched at 3.9 p.m., the ,first to reach the winning-post bqing E. W. Shanahan, who won tho Canterbury College cross-country race on the previous Saturday. J. Hart was second, and P. N. Jones third, while the remainder finished in the following order: —A. Sipthorpe, A. Corey, H. Sheard, W. Coard, P. Bamford, B. East and R. Winter. J. Gee did mot finish. Shanahan’s time for the distance (11) miles) was Ihr 21min 51®ec,. while those of Hart and Jones were Ihr 23min 30 sec, and Ihr 23min 30 l-ssec respectively, the others finishing close up. This is the first time for many years that an authentic record has been established for this journey, and in the opinion of athletic authorities, Shanahan’s time will prove' hard to beat. Jones’s actual time to the top of Dyer’s Pass was 26 min, with Shanahan 30sec behind. J. Bart wins Dr Thacker’s cup with a total score of 13 points, with P. N. Jones second 7 points. Mr J. E. Green was- judge and timekeeper, and Messrs 0. Lake, Northey and Burt officiated as track stewards.
