A Syrian named Malouf was to have gone to New Zealand by the Manuka, in accordance with the dictum of the Minister of External Affairs, that he must leave Australia. Just before tho steamer sailed Malouf informed the authorities that he intended to stay and fight the matter out. Malouf is an accredited American citizen by residence conditions. Ho was educated there. Had he left the State the American consul would have entered a formal protest against the deportation of an American citizen. Malouf’s uncle, who is a very wealthy resident of Sydney, intends to take his nephew’s case up before the courts of the Empire, The Prime Minister’s explanation puts a different complexion on the case. Malouf was only granted a permit to remain a year to wind up some business of bis mother’s. He appealed for an extension, and the American consul supported his application, affirming that he would guarantee his departure at the expiry of the extended period. When the time came Malouf asked to be allowed to stay permanently, but the Government was inexorable.
