THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. [Pur Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 2. The championship tennis tournament was concluded this afternoon. Heavy rain fell all the morning, and the courts were decidedly soft. Fisher and Miss Ward beat Swanston and. Miss Powdrell in the semi-final round of the Combined Championship Doubles, 6-4, 6-4. In the final Parker and Miss Nunneley beat Fisher and Miss Ward, 6-3, 6-3, and won the championship. Miss Powdrell beat Miss Ross in the final of the Ladies’ Handicap Singles. The Ladies’ Handicap Doubles fell to Misses' Powdrell and Campbell. | The Combined Handicap Doubles were won I by Kiver and Miss Berkeley. [From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, January 2. > I The Lawn Tennis Association’s championship tournament was.completed at Wellington to-day. A heavy downpour of rain prevented an early start being .made, but by the afternoon the courts were quit© playable. In the semi-final of toe Combined Championship Doubles F. M. B. Fisher and Miss Ward rather unexpectedly beat Swanston and bliss Powdrell in two sets straight, thus qualifying to meet Parker and Mies Nunneley in the final. Fisher won the first game chiefly through his excellent net worn, -but the holders replied with five games in succession. Fisher took the next two, before the winning game was scored against him. The second set opened with the rare occurrence of Parker losing a game on his service, and chiefly through Fisher’s efforts the score stood 3-1 in his favour. The latter then became very inaccurate, finding the net repeatedly. Before he re- ‘ covered form the match was lest, Par- ! ker and Miss Nunneley having won the , last five games in succession. | In the Combined Handicap Doubles, Kiver and Miss Berkeley, Christchurch, met Ward and Mies Ward, and had a very close game. At one stage the score stood 4-9, 4-3 in favour of the latter pair, who wanted only one stroke to win, but Kiver scored the next eight shots on his service and won the match. In the final round they met Adams and Miss Adams, and won by 50 to 43. Mias Berkeley played soundly throughout,

placing well across the court, thus giving Kiver, who was in finst-olaes form, every opportunity to score outright. The match that wes omon-ged between Canterbury and Wellington was abandoned, blest of the southern players left by the steamer to-night.
