CONSUMPTION CRUSADE

Dr C. Morton Anderson and Dr Jennings addressed the members of the Trades and Labour Council on Saturday night on the question of consumptives. They pointed out the large deathrate from this disease, and that the best results would !be obtained from sanatorium treatment. Tho doctor’s expressed surprise at the apparent apathy of tho public in general on this very important question, and stated that this was a movement that both young and old should help.. Dr Jennings said if they could only get the school children to contribute^ one penny each per month until next winter, sufficient money would be raised to complete the out work. Every po'und subscribed would be subsidised by the Go-, vernment by twenty-four shillings. Some people thought that this was a work the Government should attend to, but Dr Jennings said if the Government were supposed to save drowning persons, and one saw a man in the water drowning, would ho leave him there and. run For the Government official. No ; the man, would endeavour to save him himself. This was a similar case. Many cases of consumption could bo cured if only attended to in an early stage. Tho sanatorium was the place where this could be successfully accomplished, and as small-pox had been practically extinguished, so by a systematic treatment consumption in a few years would be a thing of the past. Tho Council accorded a hearty vote of thanks to the- doctors for putting the question before the mombera. It was decided to communicate with every affiliated and unaffiliated union, ' asking practical support, for this !amiable object. The president and secretaries were instructed to draw’ up a circular letter, with subscription lists attached, to be forwarrled to the unions.
