Four of the inotor riders OSmpeting in the Five-mile Handicap at the New Zealand Wheel Race meeting have informed the secretary of the Christchurch Cycling and Motor Club thiri they will attempt to lower the Australasian record for that distance, for which a special prize of a 'five guinea gold medal has been given by a Victorian visitor to Christchurch, and five of those entered for the One-mile Invitation Scratch Cycle Race have also given notice of their intention to attempt to lower the Australasian record for that distance, for which a similar medal has boon given by the same gentleman for any rider who shall accomplish this task. . ■ ' The annual Now Zealand Wheel Race meeting will be hold at Lancaster Park on Monday afternoon, under .the management of the Christchurch 1 Cycling and Motor Club. The entries for many of the events are a record, whilst the ninety-six riders who will compete represent almost every part of the Island, so that spectators are sure to see a very .interesting afternoon’s sport. The first race is timed to start at 2.30, and between then and five o’clock twenty-two events will be run off. The chief handicap event of the meeting is the New Zealand Wheel Race, of two miles, for which stakes to the amount of 50 sovs are offered. In addition special prizes of £2 2s will be awarded the • winners of the preliminary heats, and, also a special prize of a like amount to the rider* who in the opinion of the stewards accomplishes the most meritorious performance throughout this race. .Several members of the Government have stated their intention of- being present.
