THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

Mr G. Rennie addressed the ©lectors of l Ellesmere at Greenpark, on Friday evening. Mr F.’Hubbard was chairman, and the candidate received a very favourable reception. A hearty vote of thanks was passed, on the motion of Mr A. lumber. Mr J. Ivess, the Liberal candidate for Selwyn, held a meeting at the Woodstock Settlement on Friday evening. Mr Peter Purves was voted to uae chair, and nearly the whole of the settlers in the settlement were present. At the close of the candidate’s address no questions were asked, and Mr James Purves, in a few complimentary words, moved a vote of thanks to Mr Ivess for his address, and confidence in his candidature. The motion was seconded by Mr William Farvelly and carried unanimously. The Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Socialist party has decided to nominate Mr F. Cook as a candidate for East Christchurch. A public meeting in connection with the movement was held in Cathedral Square on Saturday night, at which over 1000 people were present. Councillor Brocks, of Blackburn©, England, gave an address, and concluded by urging the workers to vote the straight socialist “ticket.” Another public meeting will be held at the Caversham corner, High Street, to-night, at eight o’clock. Mr O. Lafferty writes:-—“As it has been freely reported that I have resigned from the Political Labour League, and thrown over Mr Thorn, I take this opportunity to inform you that there is not the slightest truth in the above reports. . I •null give Mr Thorn the support that I would have expected from him had I been successful in the ballot.” A meeting of Mr W. W. Collins’s friends and supporters will be held in the Richmond School at eight o’clock to-morrow evening. Mr B. Baynes will meet his friends and supporters at the Maori Hall, Ndw Brighton, at eight o’clock on Wednesday evening.
