THE CHAMPION SHIELD MATCHES. At Iho lUdoiiffs rifle range on Saturday afternoon the local • Volunteer companies which had entered. for Ho champion shield matches fired their first competition. lhas year tha conditions are company aga-scst company, the one having tie greatest number of win® at tha conclusion ot the -aeries being awarded the championship. • The following--was the pairing on Saturday in- the Senior Shield contest;—-Limvood Rifles (present holders of the Shield) v. College Rifles. Engineers v. Imperial' Rifles, and City 'Guards v. City Rifles." Teams consisted of-ten men, and seven shots each were fired, at 503, GOO and TCOyds, Bisley targets. Though the *l- - was fine, a light and uncertain wind blew, land the scoring was not very high,' 89 points out .of 105 being the highest total recorded. . Th.o Xfinwoo'd Rifles defeated the College Rifled by 217 points, Engineers beat tho Imperials - by 21-1 points, and the City Guards won from the City Rifle® by ,56 points. The third Amuri Mounted Scouts’ shooting competition between iho companies of the No. 2 Battalion, North Canterbury Mounted Rifles, for the belt presented by Mr Duncan Rutherford took place on the Amuri Corps’ rango, Culverden, on Friday afternoon. The shooting was supervised by Colonel Chaffey, Captain-Adjutant Johnston of tho battalion staff, Captain Million and Lieutenant Hunter, of the Oust Mounted. Rifles, and was under the following conditions;—Ail firing to he on horseback; competitors to parade and coVnpeta in marching order, the magazine not to be used; horses to be bona fide property of members of the squadron; not more than three men in one .squadron to fire off the same horse; ihe target to measure. Sft by Bft, with figure of enemy on horseback painted thereon; all hits-upon tho enemy to count five points, upon' the horse two points, and upon the target one point; fixed sights (509yds) only to be used. In firing the trooper had to start from a point ‘about 600 yards from the target and gallop to a 400yds range and fire three rounds; 1 then to proceed to 200yds and 1 fire three rounds, andl finally to IOCKds and fire three; then to trot back to an inspection officer. The time limit for the whole exercise was eight minutes. The figures on the target represented a Cossack mounting his horse, and were life size. Only two of tho corps were represented, there being three competitors from the Oust and eight from the Amuri. Captain-Adjutant Johnston, also fired. Last year the trophy was won by Trooper Garland, of the Gust Corps, and yesterday Corporal Peary, of the same corps, was the successful competitor, hia time being four minutes and number of points 28 (five hits on the enemy, one on the horse, ‘and ono on the target). The other competitors were—. Sergeant Curran (A.M.R.), 3min Silseo, 21 points; Trooper Brookor (A.M.R.), 6min, 20 points; Trooner iS'tono (A.M.R.), omin, 16 -points; Trooner Grim'ey (A.M.R.), smin, 16 points; Trooper Steffens (C.M.R.), 6Jmin, 15 points; Captain-Ad-jutant Johnson, 4min sseo, 12 points; Corporal Wills (A.M.R.), SJmin, 11 noints; Trooper Garland (C.M.R.), 6min, 8 points ! Trooper Dunbar (A.M.R.), SimJn, 7 points 1 Trooper Greed (A.M.R.), smin, 4 points; Sergeant Maar (A.M.E.), Grain, 2 points. The winner holds the belt for a year, and h'so receives a Kaiapoi rug. Tho Christchurch Defence Rifle Club opened the season at the range,-Cashmere, on Trafalgar Day, with a ten-shot match at SCO and 600yds. Considering that it was the first match of the season, some very creditable scores were made, and n very pleasant afternoon was spent. Sides were drawn for by the captain and honorary secretary, and tile match resulted in. favour of tho latter by thirty-five points.
