WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. , [Pzp. Peess Association".] , WELLINGTON, October 20. The Wellington Racing Cub was favoured with perfect weather for the opening day of the spring meeting. The course had dried quick.y after the recent heavy rains, and was in good order, although « trifle holding along tha back stretch. The attendance was quite up to the average, in spito of the fact thai there was no direct rai.way communication with the course, the branch lino from Petone having been badly damaged in last week's gale, and the club's patrons had to journey by rail to Lower Hutt, and then reach the course by conveyance or on foot. The Governor and suite and a. good muster of members of both branches of the Legislature were amongst those present. The race for the Wellington Handicap furnished the surprise of the day, Tercclet, an outsider, winning from 3tarfc to finish. Tli© favourite, Mahutonga, ran a good race, but the going at the back apparently aiu. not suit him. A double event totalisator was opened on the Wellington Handicap and Flying Handicap, and attracted an investment- of £736. No tickets were, taken on iho winning double, Tcrcelet and La,ss o' Gowrie, and the money was returned to investors, less 10 per cent. The totalisator turnover for the day amounted to as compared -with £10.029 on tho corresponding day last year. Moss writes to his representative here that Canteen was sold to Sir Rupert Clarke for 3000 gs, without any conditions attaching to the sale. Mr Moss says that he tried to resist, but the price was too tempting. RICCAETON TRAINING NOTES. Thursday. Climatic conditions were all that could be desired, and the tracks were in capital order. Cutts was the first to commence, despatching Stronghold, who is looking somewhat light in condition after his trip north," for a circuit at half speed. Cannie Chiel and To-morrow dashed over six furlongs on the plough in lmin ISsec from a standing start. To-mor-row showed mors brilliancy than her companion, but tired towards the finish, allowing Cannie Chicl, who was fully extended, to j defeat her by a length. They were both carrying good imposts, and the gallop was an attractive one. Ability performed a leisurely task over a circuit, while Quarryman ran seven furlongs in 3 mm 33 4-sse.c. Chryseis, who accompanied him over the last five furlongs, was going strongly at the finish. Catharine Gordon and Count Gorton cantered once round, finishing over the last half-mile at three-quarter speed. Catherine Gordon went on for another circuit, while Count Gorton was joined by Obligation. The pair cantered round to the half-mile post, where they broke aw.ay, running the distance in filjsec, Count Gorton having the most to say at the finish. King's Guest dashed over five furlongs on the grass in lmin osec. Lady Wayward, who was to ' have accompanied him, broke away before reaching the post, and came on slone at three-quarter spocd. Tessera negotiated a circuit at a sound lialfepoed, while Miretta ran six furlongs on the grass in lmin 23 3-ssec. Magnificent cantered a circuit, a.nd was then joined by Rose Shield, the pair, running home from the half-mile mark at three-quarter BjH<-d. King Stork, with a light-weight up, ran six furlongs on the plough in lmin 21Jsec, without being hurried. The Mohican, Huku, Stepdancer and The Guesscr were associated iu a working gallop ovor seven furlongs, run in lmin 37J63C, tho quartet finishing abreast. Canticle brushed over the laßt two furlongs of a steady round, and Slow Tom negotiated two circuits, brushing- over the last half mile of each round. Malakoff, with M'Cluskey for a pilot, then made his appearance for a gallop over ten furlongs. Taxpayer acted as pacemaker for the first half-mile, when he was joined by Tupnra. who 'held hio companion safe throughout. The times for various stages of the gallop were as follow: —First two furlongs 281 sec, six furlonga lmin 22JseCj and the full distance in 2min 17 4-ssec. This gal-

lop was accomplished on the outside of tho grass, and as the timing marks are measured for the inside of the track, he would have run slightly over the journey. However, there was nothing very impressive about the performance. Handel and Astoria finished together at the end of a spin over half a mile. Clanburn put in steady pacing over two circuits, while Oblivion 11. was out, but merely walked. After the breakfast interval Shellfire compassed two circuits on the tan, the last round at three-quarter speed. Ordnance brushed over the last half mile ol two steady circuits, while S'aranges and Phaetontis put in a working gallop-over ten furlongs. Golden Vein was given a similar task. Gold Bangle galloped Eix furlongs, the last half-mile occupying 53sec. Czarevr.a appeared to more advantage than Makaroff snd Kalypso over half a mile, run in 50 3-ssec, on the grass. Gleuowlet cleared away from Clanchattan over a similar distance, which occupied 49 4-ssec, from almost a standing start, a brilliant performance. Bonnie Brae, with an advantage in the weights easily defeated Jacket in a 3pin over half a mile, which was covered in 55sec. Beau Seaton . finished strongly over thn last two furlongs of a steady round, while Conal galloped five furlongs up the back in lmin.-SJsec. Wet Blanket easily defeated Eurus'over a stronglyrun mile, and Cerise and Blue ran five furlongs in lmin Osec, from a standing start. Oyster brushed over the last part of a me-dium-pace circuit, while several others were given more or less useful pacing.
