CANTERBURY v. TARANAKI. [From Cub Correspondent.] HAWERA, August 26. The representative hockey match, Taranaki v. Canterbury, was played at Hawera to-day, before'a large assemblage of spectators, and resulted in a win for the visitors by one goal to nil. The local men. previously held an unbeaten record, but were now overcome by 'superior play. The performance of the Canterbury forwards • was 1 admitted by the Taranaki men to be a revelation, and there is no doubt that they played better than in any previous match on the tour. The ground was in first-class order, and the visitors made the most of the conditions which suited them. M’Galium] in goal, for Taranaki, saved several splendid shots, and but for him the score •must have read 1 four or five in favour of the southern men. The Canterbury team had the local men hard pressed during the greater portion of the game. Taranaki, not versed in the combined forward passing game, went in more for hard hitting, and fast following up. In the first spell, the play was mostly on Canterbury’s left wing, and Rankin and Millichamp hardly got anything to do. In the second, the work was more evenly distributed, and, from a grand piece of combined play by the southern forwards and halves, Jacobs shot the only goal of the match. It is scarcely, necessary to particularise the members of the Canterbury team as every man played a sterling game. Ford and Jacobs, on the left, worked splendidly together, and frequently beat all opposition, sending the ball across the circle in fine style. Rankin, Millicharap and Luxton also worked vigorously. Oram and Mahar secured the ball whenever it came within reach, the latter doing some fine play along the line. . He is the right man in the right' place. Rogers, on the left, took a lot of passing, frequently beating Elliott when it came to stick play. Ford and Campbell were again safe, although Elliott got .past the former' two or three times. Smith, in goal, played his best game since the commencement of the tour, and though not often called on, was there every time. For Taranaki, Elliott, on the right wing, was well fed by bis halves, and) made good use of his chances, superior play by his opponents, in the back division, preventing his getting the ball across to the centre. M’Carthy, the captain, played; well as right inside. So did A’Court, centre half, and H. Elliott, right back. Swinburne, left back, tired perceptibly through being constantly pressed. Mr •H. M. Fayne gave every satisfaction with the whistle. The Canterbury men are all well, and; leave on Thursday, playing a return game with Wanganui in the affernoou.
