SUMNER DRAINAGE.

TO THE KDITOS. Sir, —I should like to say a word or two in-answer to "Old Resident's" letter, appearing in your issue of to-day regarding the above. .* I feel sorry to- see such -a, dastardly attack on our Borough Engineer written by one who is too -cowardly to sign his name, knowing that the insinuations that he makes are, in the light of fasts, totally unwarranted. But, in order to assert them, he must sign a. nom deplums, so that he< can vent his vindictive feelings without fear of being found out. No one knows better than '' Old Resident," when tlw Borough Engineer stated that the cost of pumping would bo. under the.new water-supply extension scheme, only onehalf the present cost, it was due to the fact that the distance to the reservoir will,.under the new, scheme, hs considerably under half the- distance it is at present. The new reservoir will be on Mr Beaven's Hill. Therefore, it would'take half the cost it stakes at present to pump into the- one en Mrs White's Hill; hence the engineer's statement. As to comparing a drain three chains long at. Redcliffs with the present proposed drainage scheme at.'Sumner, it is only more evidence of the litter-inability of "Old Eesident" to judge- on such an important matter. I trust 'every Sumner resident wilL on Thursday next come forward, and vote in favour of this long wished-for drainage .scheme-, which has the. Government sanction, being passed by the highest engineering .and medical authorities New Zealaad can produce.—l am. etc., AN OLD RESIDENT OF SUMNER.
