THE VANCOUVER SUBSIDY. A CANADIAN PROPOSAL. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Dec. 10. Mr David 1 Mills, the Melbourne manager of the Union Steamship Company, has had an interview with Sir Edmund Barton with reference to the renewal of the subsidy for the Vancouver service, which expires in M;iy. The negotiations are at present feeing kept private, but it is understood that the question of arranging the subsidy 011 a new basis has been raised, and incidental thereto the improvement of the service by introducing a superior class of steamers running at a higher speed. Some time ago the Canadian Government proposed that Australia should join in subsidising a line of freight steamers to Australia by way of the Cape. Sir E. Barton replied that the Commonwealth was not prepared to participate in the scheme.
