FIRES.

There was an alarm of fire in St Albans at an early hour yesterday, and the Brigade turning out, found a shed at the back of Mrs Pope’s Nursing Home, at the corner of Holly Road, in flames. The fire was quickly extinguished, the large underground tank in Holly Road, which was used for the first time, providing a plentiful supply of water. It is worthy of note that the Brigade had only been" reorganised a few hours previously. The city bells also rang, and the city ’Brigades turned out, and proceeded as far as the North Belt. It is not known how the fire originated. The damage was very slight. The Lyttelton firebell rang at 4 p.m. yesterday, and the brigade turned out smartly. The cause of the alarm was the accidental ignition of a window curtain in a house occupied hy Mr H. Bennett in Ticehurst Road. The flames were extinguished before any, serious damage was done.
