BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SYDENHAM. The 'Sydenham- Borough; Council met last evening ; ' present—the Mayor (Mr J. B. Sim), and Councillors Hadfield, Clifford, Johnston, M'Meekan, Smith, Parsons, Millar, Webb, Jones, Bowden and Forrester. The Finance Committee reported receipts since last meeting to the amount of £3007 17s 9d, and recommended accounts totalling £240 lis 6dl for payment. The balances of accounts were stated, to be as follow: Credits—SepaTato accounts £529 14* 3d, interest account £639 18s sdi, loans £2352 13s; d'ebit—general account £5463 4s lOd. The report was adopted. The Works Committee aridi Reserves Committee recommended that the application of the Rivals Cricket Club for one match wicket and two practice wickets in the Park should 'be granted. It was stated that the committee Bad offered the Railway Cricket, Club a cricket pitch, at the east end of the Park on payment of £5 for the season. The report was adopted!, as 1 was also tihat of the Water Supply Committee, which reoommended that the local Fire Brigade should be allowed l to attend any fires within twenty chains of the borough boundaries, on a guarantee being given for the payment of £lO on each occasion. The committee asked authority to purchase a hose reel, three lengths of hose, and dummy hydrants for practices of the brigade. A letter | was received from the Mayor of Christ-church, stating that he proposed sugfesting to- the Governor the appointment of an. 22 as a convenient , date for the election of a Tramway Board'. 'The Council decided to fall in. with ,the proposal. Some discussion followed the reading of a letter from the Drainage Board with regard to the suggested extension of the sewer in Colombo. Street to serve the new Municipal Buildings. The Board stated that a 9-inch pipe would cost £167, and a 6-inch pipe £lO4, and it would do the work if tne Council would pay two-thirds of the cost. Councillor Webb " That the letter be received, and? that the Council call for alternative tenders- to get the work done." Councillor Forrester sugested, 'as an amendment, that the Board should be asked to allow the Council to lay a 6-inch pipe from the new Municipal Buildings to Brougham Street, under the Board's supervision. Councillor Jones opposed both measures, saying that he hoped that, when it got its septio tank, the borough: would soon have a sewage system of its own, independent of the Drainage Board, and that the Council would be able 'to manage with regard to its new buildings for some time to come at least, by itself. The Mayor thought that the Drainage Board should! he asked to reconsider the matter, and make ' a larger concession. Finally the amendment was withdrawn, and the motion was lost by the Mayor'si casting vote. Councillor Hadfield then moved—" That a deputation! be appointed to wait- upon the Board, with the object of securing further concessions." The proposal was adopted, and the Mayor, Councillor Hadfield l and Councillor Bowdten were elected members of the deputation. LINWOOD. The ordinary meeting of the •Linwood Borough Council was 'held last evening; present—the Mayor (Mr H. Pearce) and Councillors Seed, Brunt, Otley, Young, Jamieson, Wagstaff, Brown, Cleworth, Robertson, Denton and Dixon. Accounts to the amount of £315 Is 3d were passed for payment. A letter was read from the Avonslde Cemetery Board, in. which it was stated that the Board had no intention of extending the boundaries of the cemetery at the present time, though it had a perfect legal right to do so if it desired. A considerable quantity of correspondence on minor matters was dealt with. The Finance Committee reported the receipts on general account'since last meeting to hav« been £473 13s 3d and on the loan account £96 17s lOd. ■ The balances at the bank were: Debit —general account £567 17s Bd, on deposit £IOB2 10s, total £1650 7s 8d; credit—loan account £636 4s 4d, recreation ground £B4 12s, total £720 16s 4d. The sundries account had 'been closed, all the

outstanding items having been collected (about £80), and all the channelling- accounts for 1901 had been got an.' The delegates to the Greater Christchurch, Conference reported what had been done at the meeting. Councillor Jamieson gave notice to move at the next meeting—" That thi* meeting affirms the desirableness of union with the city of Christchurch, and desires that the necessary steps should be taken to bring about amalgamation between the city of Christohuroh and the borough of Linwood." Councillor Jamieson moved that the Council should contribute £35 towards the experiment of sinking & deep well to the distance of 1000 ft, in conjunction with the neighbouring bodies. lA' lengthy discussion ensued, and eventually the motion was lost. The Mayor ,said that there had been a misunderstanding regarding the mimber of yeans* guarantee offered to the Town Clerk. The number waa three, not five. After some further business the Council rose. LYTTELTON. An ordinary meeting of the Lyttelton . Borough Council was held yesterday evening ; present—the Mayor (Mr J. Grubb), and Councillors S. R. Webb R, Brown, J. Garrard, W. Radcliffe, G. C. Smith, W. C. Geary, C. Cook and W. Whitby. An invitation from the Lyttelton Methodist Cricket Club for the Council to join in opening the season on Labour Day was accepted with thanks. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts sinceVlast meeting haid been £152 4s 9d, and recommended payment of accounts to tie amount of £270 5s 2d on general account, and £l3 6s on the waterworks account. The balances of the various accounts were as follows:—General, debit £672 16s 2d; waterworks, credit, £99 13s 4d ; drainage, credit, £2611 18s ;' abattoir, credit £lO 10s lid. The Town Clerk reported that all payments on account of the,new Fire Bri-'-gade Station and tower had been mad«, and that £2OO was due from the Government on account of the tower, so that there was practically a .debit of ,£472 16s 2d, against which, in the new station and tower, there was an asset worth; £2300. The reports were adopted. It was decided to prosecute. persons who had recently broken street lamps in the borough. The reports of the Foreman of Works and the Works Committee were adopted. It was decided to write to the Heathcote Road Board, calling attention to the bad state of the road on the Christchurch side of the Bridle Path. After some routine business the Council went into committee, and on resuming rose.
