The position of the Government is likely to be challenged over the action of the Attorney-General in recommending the release of Friedman, a -well-known merchant and money-lender, who was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment on a charge of receiving a large quamitity of stolen, property. The Judge, in passing sentence, said that if it had been within his province to decide the case he would not have found the accused guilty, but he must abide by the decision of the jury. Within twentyfour hours of the passing of sentencei Friedman was released. The Press and public raised a great outcry against what ttoey claim was a deliberate ignoring of the jurysystem.
