Mr Mackay, the British Commissioner, •has refused to sign the new Chinese commercial treaty owing to the indefinite wording of the Imperial edict sanctioning signature. Tho missionaries, Bruce and Lewis, were hkiten to death on, August 15, the mob believing a woman's allegation that tho foreigners had scattered poison in the streets.
