SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

■ A general meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Canterbury Scottish Society was held ip, the rooms of the Yorkshire Society last‘evening, «t which there was am attendance of about 60 members. Before business began, the chief, Mr A. Macphereou, moved a vote of sympathy with Queen Alexandra’ and the Royal Family on tha illness of the King, expressing the Society’s joy 'at the prospect of his Majesty’s recovery, and its trust that the Almighty would renew his health and prolong his

life. A considerable number'of new mem■i bers were admitted, and when an associate ®"o£ -only eighteen mouths’ old was proposed, there was loud cheering. It was decided that a “pirlie pig” should he presented 1 to the youngest member, the procuring of ■ this Scottish savings bank being entrusted to Mr C. Stnart-Edward, while Mr Morrison undertook to engrave the associate's name on the “pirlie,” and to contribute ; the first coin. The committee having charge of the arrangements for the “forei- gathering” on July 17, reported the preparation of !a satisfactory programme, and other business was disposed of. To Pipe- ' Major M’Kenzie’s music, Associate M’FarJane danced a Highland fling very gra.eefully.
