FIRES.
[Pjir Press Association.] CARTERTON, Dec. 28.
Stables valued at £300, ; and owned, by Mrs Tucker, were burned last night. Incendiarism is suspected, this being the fourth outbuilding mysteriously burned in as many months. It was insured for £125.
Shortly after ten o'clock on Sunday morning, the firebells rang out an alarm, the fire being in the south-west portion of the city. The Brigades were quickly on the spot, and found the two-storeyed wooden workshop of Mr H. Scrimshaw, in Durham Street South, burning fiercely. Plenty of water was available, and though a strong wind was blowing, which threatened to take 'the flames to the adjoining houses, the fire was soon got under control, and was confined to +he building in which it started. This, however, was completely gutted. The building was insured for £2O in the Liverpool and London and Globe office, but Mr Scrimshaw valued it at £4O, while £4O worth of tools which it contained, were also burned. The fire was caused by two small children letting off crackers in the upper storey, and these set fire to some loose shavings.
