Sir, —I am somewhat surprised that so far no intimation has been made by the leading retail firms as to their intention of closing their establishments on Thursday,' following New Year's Day. Are we employees not to get this anticipated holiday this New Year, or has the matter so far been overlooked by our employers during the past week's extra rush of business? I am sure it only needs that the initiative be taken by the large firms to signify their intention of closing, when all others will follow in doing so. lam given to understand that in the other centres, Dunedin, Wellington. and Auckland, ibis second day is an understood custom at New Year.—l am, etc., ENJOY LIFE WHILE WE OAN,
