WORK AND WAGES.
[Per Press Association.] NELSON, August 22. The following resolution, relative to rhe Factories Bill; was adopted by the Chamber of Commerce to-day:—"That this Chamber urges that- no reduction or encroachment he made upon, the forty-eight hours now constituting a, week's labour, and that no further definition should be made of the rates to be paid for overtime, nor any further limitation setmpon the amount of 'overtime- worked by adults." Jt was pointed out *hat in connection with certain local industries it was absolutely necessary to deal with fruit, vegetables, etc., as they came to ;the factories,, and that it was impossible to make extra* charges to- cover the cost of increased payment, for overtime, or less incurred through the shortening of hours. Speakers said that the enterprises would ba killed, and people thrown out of employment, if the Bill passed.
