DUNEDIN HOSPITAL.
[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, August 21. At a meeting of the Dunedin- Hospital Trustees, remarks made by (Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., respecting the alleged ill-treatment of a. patient by nurses in the Dunedin Hospital was referred to, and on the motion of the Chairman, it was resolved that the Government should be asked respectfully but firmly to set up a magisterial inquiry into the statements made by Mr Mackenzie, and that that gentleman, should be asked to be present or represented. The trustees expressed milch indignation at the attack on a defenceless nurse, and there were many hard things said of Mr Mackenzie. The Chairman said that if, as stated, the patient was slapped on the face by a nurse, other patients must have seen it. Ho had received telegrams Txom patients in the ward at the time, all expressing readiness to give evidence to refute the charges. When Mr Mackenzie had-flared up in the ward, it was suggested that he should see. the house surgeon, but he said that he was too busy. The Chairman denied that the patient, referred to. was too weak to be removed. It was five weeks before death, and he could have been taken to any part of the colony.
